LIES v FACTS

HOW THE MEDIA ARE MISLEADING YOU ABOUT GUNS

As part of the content of our Concealed Carry License classes, we usually end up discussing many of these issues. One of our students at a recent class commented that, since she herself was surprised to learn these facts, it would be really useful to have this information in a place readily available to help them spread the truth. We thought that was a great idea so this page was created!

It will be an ongoing project and we'll be happy to add any facts/fiction examples that you have come across as we go along - just email them to us.

Responsible, law-abiding citizens who cherish their 2nd Amendment rights are being demonized and portrayed as a bunch of ignorant, violent, banjo-strummin' Deliverance extras. When in actual fact our students include Doctors, lawyers, Pastors, teachers and all of them are decent, honest people willing to undergo an FBI back-ground check because they know they haven't broken the laws of this nation and have no intention of doing so.

So the next time you hear someone quoting an "expert"  simply wanting to remove "Automatic Military Style Assault Weapons from the hands of civilians" because "It's only common sense" please politely correct them with facts.

MYTH

Civilians are running around with automatic military grade weapons like AR 15's.

FACT

Military personnel are issued with automatic weapons. The difference between an automatic and a semi-automatic weapon is as follows:

To fire an automatic weapon, you pull the trigger and hold it to discharge all rounds from the magazine.

To fire a semi-automatic weapon, you need to pull the trigger each time you wish to discharge it. The AR 15 is a SEMI-automatic.

MYTH

The letters "AR" stand for "Assault Rifle".

FACT

The letters "AR" actually stand for ARMALITE RIFLE which relates to the company that developed this firearm. The term "Assault Rifle" is one that has been invented by folks with an agenda. Following that logic, if I stab you with a knife or choke you with a piece of rope, haven't I used an "Assault Knife" or "Assault Rope"?

MYTH

Immediately following the terrorist attack at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL) was interviewed by CNN's Erin Burnett. He stated that "If he was not able to buy a weapon that shoots off 700 rounds in a minute, a lot of those people would still be alive". Erin Burnett failed to correct Grayson and her response instead was "You're right about that. Thank you very much".

FACT

He was not able to buy a weapon that shoots 700 rounds per minute. This is a bald faced lie.

MYTH

The solution to crime is more gun control laws.

FACT

Chicago has one of the highest crime rates in the US. There are are always calls for more gun control laws. However this one example illustrates that the solution lies in enforcing the existing ones rather than creating new ones that by their very definition, criminals will break.
In Sept 2016, Peter Fabbri, a 54 year old, law abiding father of two grown daughters was brutally shot in the head and murdered by a Chicago gang member who was well known to law enforcement.
The suspect, 32 year old Paul Pagan had been arrested 39 times and was twice convicted for pointing a gun during an argument. He also has convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, marijuana possession and possession of a stolen vehicle. There was a warrant out for his arrest yet he was back on the street, allegedly with a gun.
Chicago Police First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro stated “By failing to serve sufficient penalties, the offenders have nothing to fear.”
However, under Federal law, there ARE sufficient penalties.
In this particular case, for the accused killer, as a convicted felon, mere possession of any firearm is a federal felony under 18 U.S.C. 922 (9g) which calls for 10 years in a federal prison.
Then there's 924(c) which covers carrying, using or possessing a firearm in connection with a crime of violence or drug trafficking crime. That calls for sentencing of an additional MINIMUM five years with potential for 7, 10 or even 30 additional years depending on the firearm used in the crime.
Pagan had 4 felonies and was currently wanted on a gun charge. Under the Armed Criminal Career Act section 18 U.S.C. Sec. 924 (e), a convicted prohibited person who had 3 prior violent felony convictions can be put away for a 15 year mandatory minimum.
Then there's 924 (j), covering death during a 924 (c) violation, which provides sentencing of up to life in prison and under certain circumstances carries the death penalty.
Clearly after his first felony conviction and subsequent arrest for armed violent crime, he could have been put away. It would have been an easy conviction and Mr Fabbri would have been alive and enjoying life with his family today.

MYTH

Anyone can buy a gun on EBay without a background check.

FACT

You cannot buy or sell guns on EBay. There are some sites that you can do so (for example Gunbroker.com) but any gun purchased here must have the gun shipped to an FFL Dealer (Federal Firearms License) by the seller and the buyer must then go to that dealer and have the ownership transferred into their name (for a fee).
